Media Queries in Responsive Web Design
For those who wonder what media queries is, media query is a CSS technique that can be used to include a block of CSS properties only if a condition is true. Media queries are heavily used when making our web application responsive. When we make our web application responsive, but it did not look good on a small screen media queries comes to our rescue.
Example:
@media only screen and (max-width: 480px) {
.column {
width: lightblue;
}
}
.column {
width: lightblue;
}
}
The above media query change the width of the elements that has a class name of '.column' when browser window is smaller than 480px.
A very good beginner tutorials to media quires are,
The main goal of this post is to let readers know about the best width ranges for detecting media queries in a responsive design. After doing a small research I found out that following media queries are used a lot for mobile screen sizes.
For Twitter's Bootstrap 2:
/* Landscape phones and down */
@media (max-width: 480px) { ... }
/* Landscape phone to portrait tablet */
@media (max-width: 767px) { ... }
/* Portrait tablet to landscape and desktop */
@media (min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 979px) { ... }
/* Large desktop */
@media (min-width: 1200px) { ... }
For Twitter's Bootstrap 3:
/* Extra small devices (phones, less than 768px) */
/* No media query since this is the default in Bootstrap */
/* Small devices (tablets, 768px and up) */
@media (min-width: 768px) { ... }
/* Medium devices (desktops, 992px and up) */
@media (min-width: 992px) { ... }
/* Large devices (large desktops, 1200px and up) */
@media (min-width: 1200px) { ... }
There is no explicit query for devices smaller than 768px.
And if you want a more harder approach, but good to know, you can accommodate all of following media queries when designing a responsive mobile site
/* Smartphones (portrait and landscape) ----------- */
@media only screen and (min-device-width: 320px) and (max-device-width: 480px) {
/* Styles */
}
/* Smartphones (landscape) ----------- */
@media only screen and (min-width: 321px) {
/* Styles */
}
/* Smartphones (portrait) ----------- */
@media only screen and (max-width: 320px) {
/* Styles */
}
